Daegu|The perfect place for shopping: Yangnyeongsi's Central Road has become Daegu's best pedestrian street.

Daegu's Yangnyeong Market dates back to 1658. Originally located near Gyeongsanggum, it facilitated the king's quick access to medicinal herbs when he fell ill. It was later relocated to Namsong-ro in 1908. The so-called "Yangnyeong Market" refers to the medicinal herb market established by the king's order.

Historically, merchants from China, Japan, the Middle East, and Siberia came here to wholesale medicinal herbs, with wild Korean medicinal herbs being particularly popular. Legend has it that tens of thousands of merchants would gather here during the spring and autumn shopping seasons.

In modern times, the output value of Yangnyeong Market even exceeded the government budget. However, due to its funding of anti-Japanese activities during the March 1st Movement, it was temporarily closed in 1941. Today, 170 pharmacies remain here, producing and wholesale 600 tons of medicinal herbs annually.

Today, Yangnyeong Market connects to the Joongang-ro Pedestrian Street, making it the busiest street in downtown Daegu, much like Dihua Street in Taipei.
