Tucked away in a quiet corner of Setagaya lies the Ōba Daikan Yashiki, a remarkably preserved samurai residence that once served as the official residence of the Ōba family, hereditary magistrates (daikan) overseeing 20 villages under the Hikone Domain during the Edo period.
Built in the mid-Edo era, this estate offers a rare glimpse into the life and governance of the time. With its thatched roof, earthen walls, and wooden corridors, it exudes a quiet dignity that feels worlds away from modern Tokyo. Visitors can still sense the authority and discipline that once defined this space.
The Ōba Daikan Yashiki is particularly significant as it is the only surviving daikan residence of a feudal domain within Tokyo, and it has been designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
A walk through the grounds in autumn, when the trees glow softly in the sunlight, makes for a peaceful and historically rich escape.
