Sevan Monastery (Sevanavank Monastery) stands on the shores of Lake Sevan in eastern Armenia.
One of Armenia's most famous monasteries, it was originally a floating monastery on the lake, but as the lake's water level dropped, it became more like a peninsula.
The name apparently comes from "vank" (monastery), which means "black" (sevank) basalt.
It was a truly photogenic, picture-book-like sight.
And on top of the hill, there was a cheerful old man resembling the Pied Piper of Hamelin, soliciting visitors.
