Cape Kamui Nature Park is a breathtakingly beautiful hidden gem, boasting 360-degree views of mountains and sea, and a captivating love story. It's one of the most worthwhile natural wonders on Hokkaido's Shakotan Peninsula.
Starting from Sawara, follow the winding coastal road to the Cape Kamui parking lot, where you'll be greeted by a strong sea breeze and expansive views. A plaque reading "Women's Forbidden Ground" at the trail entrance tells the poignant story of Minamoto no Yoshitsune and an Ainu princess who plunged into the sea for love, becoming the rock that now stands tall above.
Slowly ascending the wooden plank path, the first half offers golden grasslands and rolling hills, while the second half offers sheer cliffs and a boundless ocean view. Every step feels like walking between heaven and earth: to your left is the surging sea, to your right is the rolling mountain ridge, overhead is the azure sky, and beneath your feet is the path to Kamui Rock. The trail is flat and easy, but the wind can be strong, so exercise caution.
Because the trail was blocked, I couldn't reach the end. From afar, I could see the white lighthouse standing tall. In the distance, Kamui Rock stood isolated in the sea, its base as solid as a stone tablet. Smaller rocks dotted around it, forming a natural work of art.
