Chongming Island is an alluvial island formed at the mouth of the Yangtze River. It began to appear around 600 AD, and after 1400 years it has grown to 80km x 15km, and is still growing today. It is about twice the size of Tokyo's 23 wards, and the third largest in China after Taiwan and Hainan Island. The Yangtze River is 6300km long, making it the third largest river in the world after the Nile and the Amazon. I am amazed at the scale of China.
Chongming Island is an alluvial island, so the soil is fertile and the vegetables and fruits such as mandarins are delicious, and are recognized as the Chongming brand. It is also an island of longevity, and even though it is part of Shanghai, it is an island rich in nature that you would never think of as being in Shanghai.
