Every inch of the Shanghai Glass Museum has been meticulously designed to showcase the multifaceted nature of glass, its relationship with people, and the memories tied to this place. The exhibitions are not only rich in content but also deeply philosophical, creating a symphony of artistic and interactive displays.
Through the kaleidoscopic glass tunnel at the entrance, five screens display slow-motion footage of visitors in motion, fostering a sense of connection and capturing the subtle link between the two. One particularly striking artwork consists of 10 large stained glass windows, each depicting a face from three different generations. Made from 900 pieces of glass in varying colors and textures, this artwork visualizes the close ties between generations while subtly hinting at the heritage preserved in this space. An interactive media installation called Fusion is located at the site of the original factory's glass-making kiln. It transforms visitors' movements into dynamic visualizations of materials and elements, allowing them to experience the three primary sensations involved in the glass formation process. This installation is a collaboration between the museum and media artist Tobias Gremmler, whose work explores motion in computer art. At the center of the main hall, eight LED animation lines shoot up from the ground, illustrating the history of glass manufacturing in Shanghai, as if they were remnants of heat emanating from the kilns of the past.
