The Shanghai Expo Botanical Garden

The Shanghai Expo Botanical Garden, also known as the Shanghai Greenhouse Garden, is a stunning ecological attraction located in the Expo Cultural Park in Shanghai. It occupies a large greenhouse area of about 22,000 square meters, with a total exhibition space around 40,000 square meters. The garden uniquely blends modern architectural style with historical elements from the old Shanghai Steelworks factory, creating an elegant and immersive environment for visitors.
The garden features three main themed pavilions:
Oasis in the Desert: showcasing desert plants such as rare cacti and giant baobabs.
Forest in the Clouds: an artificial tropical mist forest with a waterfall and suspension bridges, allowing visitors to experience a rainforest atmosphere.
Misty Canyon: a tropical flower environment with palm trees, rocky scenery, and abundant vibrant flowers, including a large waterfall at the top of the pavilion.
These themed zones simulate different tropical ecosystems—dry and wet tropical habitats with shade-tolerant and sun-loving plants—providing visitors with an immersive botanical experience.
Located centrally in the Expo Cultural Park, the garden is easily accessible by metro lines 7 and 13. The greenhouse garden is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, closed on Mondays, with tickets priced at 98 CNY on weekdays and 128 CNY on weekends, bookable in advance.
Nearby, the park offers other experiences such as lakeside walks, food options in cozy cafés, and scenic views from the nearby Twin Mountains peak. The venue is ideal for nature lovers, botanists, photographers, and family outings, offering a combination of ecological beauty, cultural heritage, and modern design.
Visiting this garden is a highlight for exploring Shanghai’s green spaces post-Expo, combining education, relaxation, and visual delight in one location.
