🏛 Introduction (approx. 500 characters)
Zhangyuan (张园) is a place of historical and cultural significance, earning it the nickname "The Most Famous Garden on the Sea." Its origins can be traced back to 1882, when Zhang Shuhe, a wealthy man from Wuxi, built a private garden called "Zhangshi Taste Garden."
Over time, the garden gradually declined, and in the early 20th century, it was dismantled and the surrounding area was transformed into Shikumen (石库门)-style houses and alleys, forming the Lirong (里弄) community.
In recent years, the garden has been renovated through a "protective renovation" approach, with the West District of the garden opening to the public in November-December 2022.
Currently, the garden has been transformed into a mixed-use space that combines commercial, cultural, and artistic functions while preserving its historic architecture. Nestled among the quaint red brick gypsum-door houses are luxury brand stores, pop-up spaces, exhibition spaces, and cafes. Street performances and pop-up events are also held on weekends.
Walking through the garden, visitors can experience Shanghai's past urban residential areas, alleyway culture, and the details of gypsum-door architecture. The unique contrast between the surrounding modern high-rise buildings and classical architecture makes it a popular photo spot.
Open daily from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM, and advance reservations are required for admission.
