The newly built East Building has become a significant cultural landmark in Shanghai in recent years. Many of its exhibits, including renowned bronzes, were carefully selected and relocated from the main building (the Shanghai Museum's People's Square Building).
Useful Information and Ticketing Tips
✓ Free but Reservations Required: Admission to the East Building is free! However, reservations are strictly required; you'll need to present your reservation QR code and your passport upon entry.
✓ Avoid Crowds: While the museum is spacious and inviting, making it a relaxing experience, it can still be packed. This is especially true during the summer holidays, when the atmosphere can be incredibly crowded. To fully appreciate the works, it's highly recommended to avoid weekends and summer and winter vacations!
Visiting and Time Recommendations
✓ Time constraints: We recommend allowing approximately 60 minutes for the bronzes exhibition alone. This will leave you with a very tight schedule if you want to see everything!
✓ The new building is still under development: Although it's new, some permanent exhibition areas haven't opened yet, but the exhibits are still very exciting. ✓ Museum Supplies: Even with the crowds, I still found a seat in the cafe and basement restaurant, so I didn't have to worry about finding food or resting.
✓ Ticketing Area: Most exhibition areas are free, but special exhibitions and some permanent exhibitions require separate tickets.
Must-See Highlights
✓ Seals of Various Dynasties: This section details the history of seal use, from ancient times, official seals, to the appreciation of seals by literati. Seals of various materials, shapes, and styles are on display.
✓ Jade Carvings: Similar to the seal exhibition, the exhibits are larger and more detailed, showcasing the exquisite craftsmanship of jade carvings.
✓ Shanghai History and Archaeology: Through excavated artifacts, we glimpse the historical transformation of Shanghai from an ancient settlement to a fishing village, a fishing port, an important concession, and finally the bustling metropolis it is today.
