One of my favorite stops in the Shanghai Museum is the Gallery of Ming & Qing Furniture, showcasing masterpieces from collectors Chuang Tzeyuen and Chuang Tzekong. Walking through the gallery, I felt like I’d stepped into the private study or home of an aristocrat, surrounded by wooden chests, chairs, and cabinets carved with incredible precision and artistic flair. 🌿🪵
The beauty isn’t just in the design — it’s in the craftsmanship. Smooth curves, intricate joinery, and subtle inlays reveal a centuries-old philosophy: furniture as both function and art. I particularly loved imagining how these pieces were part of daily life, yet also objects of pride and cultural identity.
📍 Shanghai Museum, 201 Renmin Avenue, Huangpu District
🚇 How to get there: Metro Line 1, 2, or 8 → People’s Square Station, Exit 1
🕰️ Tip: Take your time to appreciate the details — carvings, lacquer work, and proportions tell stories that are easy to miss at first glance.
This gallery is more than furniture; it’s a journey into the elegance, artistry, and lifestyle of Ming and Qing China, preserved beautifully for today’s visitors. ❤️
