🏔️ Meili Snow Mountain super detailed guide (7-day deep version)
📅 Best season
October-November: High chance of clear skies, avoid rainy season, unobstructed view of the snow mountain (※ Max chance of sunlit golden mountain!)
March-May: Spring flower sea + snow peaks, fewer people and high cost performance.
Avoid: July-August rainy season with heavy clouds and fog, December-February extremely cold and possible road closures.
📍 Core areas
1. Feilai Temple (altitude 3400m)
Role: Best viewing platform for sunlit golden mountain, hotel balconies face the snow peaks directly.
Hotels: Meili Past (scenic balcony), Alpine Villa (floor-to-ceiling windows facing the main peak).
Secret spot: Walk 1km west along National Highway 214 towards Tibet to avoid crowds at the viewing platform.
2. Yubeng Village (altitude 3100m)
 Access: Xidang Hot Spring → 18km hike (about 6h) / off-road vehicle 200 yuan (40min)
 Village activities:
 ▪ Upper Yubeng: leads to Ice Lake (8h hike), faces General Peak, many dining and lodging options.
 ▪ Lower Yubeng: leads to Divine Waterfall (5h), Divine Lake (10h advanced route), a holy place for snow mountain reflection photography.
Accommodation: Youlan Inn (Upper Yubeng viewing platform), Wild Language (Lower Yubeng wild design).
3. Wunongding (altitude 3600m)
Advantage: panoramic view of Meili’s thirteen peaks, fewer people, suitable for star photography.
Hotel: Ji Xia Shan·Meili (designer hotel, rooftop viewing platform).
🚗 Transportation guide
Major transport:
Plane: Fly to Shangri-La (Diqing Airport) → carpool 3h to Deqin County.
Land: Bus from Lijiang/Shangri-La bus station to Deqin (4-5h), then transfer to minibus to Feilai Temple.
Internal transport:
 Deqin-Feilai Temple: taxi 15min (about 30 yuan).
Deqin-Xidang (Yubeng entrance): carpool 50 yuan/person, few shuttle buses, need to inquire in advance.
📜 7-day itinerary framework
Day1: Lijiang/Shangri-La → Deqin → stay at Feilai Temple (acclimate to altitude)
Day2: Feilai Temple sunlit golden mountain → Wunongding panorama → Xidang → hike/off-road to Yubeng → stay at Upper Yubeng
Day3: Upper Yubeng → Xiaonong base camp → Ice Lake → return to Upper Yubeng
Day4: Upper Yubeng → Lower Yubeng → Divine Waterfall → stay at Lower Yubeng
Day5: Divine Lake challenge (or light hike in Ninong Canyon) → exit Yubeng → stay at Feilai Temple
Day6: Mingyong Glacier (4h hiking plank road) / or Cizhong Church (French wine + century-old church)
Day7: Return to Shangri-La (stop by Songzanlin Monastery on the way)
⚠️ High-altitude survival manual
Prevent altitude sickness:
Absolutely no bathing on arrival day! Move slowly, prepare oral glucose solution.
Medication: Altitude medicine (take 1 day in advance), ibuprofen (for headache), oxygen tank (use only if necessary, avoid dependence).
Gear list:
Windbreaker + fleece (mountain top feels often 10℃ colder than forecast!)
Trekking poles + crampons (essential in rainy/icy season)
Sunscreen trio: UV400 sunglasses, SPF50+ sunscreen, windproof face scarf.
Cultural taboos:
❌ Pointing at the sacred mountain (use palm instead)
❌ Stepping on prayer flags/mani piles
Prayer wheels/mountain circumambulation must be clockwise!
💡 Atmosphere bonus
Sunlit golden mountain ritual: Scatter some highland barley at Feilai Temple; locals say wishes are more likely heard by the sacred mountain.
Yubeng night: Find a guesthouse with a fireplace, drink butter tea and listen to Tibetan owners tell mountain god legends.
Prayer flag blessing: Hang prayer flags under the Divine Waterfall (requires lama chanting); flags wet by mist mean blessings take effect.
Let go of the check-in obsession! The soul of Meili lies in moments beyond plans—like Kawa Garbo revealing its true face through suddenly clearing clouds, or the echo of yak bells ringing in the silent valley. Let the mountain shape you, not you shape the mountain.
