Shiretoko Five Lakes - Super lucky to see a mother and cub bear

The World Natural Heritage—Shiretoko Five Lakes (home of brown bears), with ancient forests and beautiful lakes, is one of the eight scenic spots in Shiretoko.

There are two ways to visit the Shiretoko Five Lakes: with a fee and for free.
1. Stroll along the natural trails beside five large and small lakes. Summer is the season for brown bears to move and breed. You need to be accompanied by a tour guide. There are large and small loops:
The large loop takes about 1.5 hours, from five lakes to one lake and the elevated wooden plank road;
The small loop takes about 40 minutes, with a short section of ground wooden plank road and elevated wooden plank road, suitable for people with poor physical strength but who want to experience it.
2. An elevated wooden path with a view of the beautiful scenery from a high platform.

We walked the entire ground trail and did not encounter any brown bears, so we did not have to turn back. The most fortunate thing was that we actually saw a mother and cub brown bear on the last section of the electrified elevated wooden plank road on the return journey. The naughty little bear was walking around everywhere, while the mother bear just followed quietly, and the sunset created a beautiful and warm picture.

I went to Shiretoko Peninsula in early June and saw bear sighting signs everywhere. I was a little scared because bears are actually very close to people. So I joined the activities led by a tour guide, which made me feel more at ease and allowed me to avoid the bears and enjoy the beautiful scenery safely.

The actual brown bear is really huge, runs much faster than humans, can climb trees and swim, and is definitely not cute if you encounter it🙄
