In Japan, a "michi-no-eki" (roadside station) refers to a rest area equipped with restaurants and highway bus stops. This rest area serves as a stop for highway buses coming from Memanbetsu, Shari, and Utoro, and also serves as a World Heritage Center, the first source of on-site information about Shiretoko National Park. It seems like Shiretoko National Park staff are dispatched here to work. Since there are as many dangers as wild animals, I recommend gathering information here before embarking on trekking trips like the Shiretoko Five Lakes. On your way back, I recommend stopping by this rest area for a meal and some local specialties. If your address is in Japan, you can even purchase and have fresh whole frozen salmon delivered. Highly recommended!!!
