Shengzhou is not just a picturesque water town in Jiangnan but also a place rich in calligraphy culture! This time, I made a special trip to the Wang Xizhi Former Residence Tourist Area to explore the traces of the life of the 'Sage of Calligraphy.' Here, you can personally experience his love for geese and appreciation for lotus flowers, making it one of the most culturally rich spots in Shengzhou. Under the clear sky, the traditional Chinese architecture and lush lotus ponds create a harmonious scene. Walking through the area, it feels as if you can hear the flow of ink and the playful chirping of waterfowl. Every corner is picture-perfect, exuding a timeless charm.
Highlights of Wang Xizhi Former Residence Tourist Area
[1] Wang Xizhi Former Residence and Calligraphy Museum
The core of the tourist area is the Wang Xizhi Former Residence, a traditional Jiangnan-style courtyard. The museum inside provides a detailed display of Wang Xizhi's life, especially the original traces of the 'Preface to the Orchid Pavilion' and related historical stories. Wang Xizhi is famously known for his love of geese, and a small pond next to the residence often has white geese swimming gracefully. The garden also features a display area simulating the scene of the calligraphy sage practicing by the pond. One of the most interesting parts is listening to the guide narrate the story of how Wang Xizhi mimicked the movement of a goose's neck to perfect his brushstrokes, offering a firsthand experience of the perfect blend of calligraphy and nature.
[2] Scenic Beauty of Lotus Ponds
The area surrounding the residence is dotted with lotus ponds. In summer, the lotus flowers bloom in full glory, while in autumn and winter, the withered lotus leaves and swaying stems present a unique beauty of 'Zen and desolation.' Whether on a sunny day or in light rain, this is a perfect spot for photography. It is especially recommended to take a stroll by the pond in the evening to feel the natural beauty of Wang Xizhi's calligraphy, which is both soft and resilient. You can also enjoy the view of flowing water, tree shadows, and modern architecture blending harmoniously, experiencing the fusion of ancient and contemporary.
[3] A Perfect Blend of Nature and Culture
The tourist area is well-planned, featuring traditional Chinese ancestral halls and ancient courtyard gates, as well as open spaces close to rivers and lakes. The path is lined with lush trees, creating beautiful light and shadow on sunny days. Birds often frolic among the lotus ponds, echoing the charm of Wang Xizhi's former residence. It is an ideal place for leisurely walks, photography, and spending quality time with family, including the elderly and children, to connect with nature.
