If you visit Izu Shimoda, why not take a ropeway to Mount Nesugata in Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park and enjoy the magnificent scenery?
📇 1-3-2 Higashihongo, Shimoda City, Shizuoka Prefecture
⏰ Ropeway operates from 8:45 AM to 5:00 PM (please note that it closes earlier in winter)
🚉 1-minute walk from Izu-Shimoda Station
The ropeway, located just a short distance from Izu-Shimoda Station, will take you to the summit in 3.5 minutes.
The mountaintop is a park with a pond, perfect for a leisurely stroll. You'll also find the remains of the Black Ship lookout post, an observation deck, and a site where over 100 Jizo statues are enshrined. From the observation deck, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Shimoda's cityscape, the ocean, and lush greenery.
The remains of the Black Ship lookout post have been restored, but since a foreign ship was arriving in Shimoda on that day, the shogunate quickly built a lookout post on Mount Nesugata and kept watch for the Black Ships day and night.
If you walk a little further, you'll find over 100 Jizo statues said to have been made in the Heian period.
And there's a really nice cafe restaurant at the ropeway station at the top of the mountain. The fluffy soufflé was served with Izu summer orange jam and Izu honey 🍯 and was absolutely delicious. It's the perfect place to take a break before boarding the ropeway.
