We made a special trip to Ichiba Shokudo Maguro to Kame, located inside Karato Fish Market, just to try the region’s famed fugu (blowfish) — a must-try delicacy in Yamaguchi.
When we arrived, there was already a line forming outside, a good sign of its popularity. We wrote our names on the waitlist and were seated within 15 minutes. The queue moved fast and the staff were very organized.
We ordered a blowfish sashimi set and deep-fried fugu, both prepared fresh. The sashimi was delicately sliced, with that signature translucent look, and had a clean, subtle sweetness. The fried version was surprisingly tender with a crispy outer layer — really tasty and easy to enjoy even if it’s your first time trying fugu.
Despite the language barrier, the service was warm and accommodating. The staff patiently guided us through the ordering process and made us feel very welcome.
One of the highlights? The view! The restaurant has large windows that look out toward the water — a great bonus to accompany a delicious and unique meal.
Definitely a spot worth visiting if you’re near Karato Market and looking for an authentic seafood experience with a local twist.
