[Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture] Karato Market, the kitchen of the Kanmon Straits🐡

Karato Market is located in Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. I traveled to Karato Market by jet boat from Mojiko Port in Fukuoka Prefecture, crossing the Kanmon Strait. This coastal market is known as the kitchen of Kanmon, where fresh seafood is gathered. Since I visited on a weekday, many of the fishmongers within the market were closed, but the restaurants were open and bustling with locals and tourists. I enjoyed the fugu I purchased from the fishmongers while sitting on an outdoor bench. The fugu I ate while enjoying the sea breeze was exquisite. There are also plenty of souvenir shops around the market, and it's an exciting spot just to browse the seafood and processed goods unique to Shimonoseki. Next time, I'd like to visit on a weekend and enjoy Karato Market's famous "Sushi Battle" (a nigiri sushi sales event).
