Located within Hoshino Resorts in Hokkaido, the Church on the Water (水の教会) is one of the iconic works designed by world-renowned architect Tadao Ando. Combining exposed concrete and natural light, the church creates a serene and solemn atmosphere. With water as its central theme, the church features a large glass façade that opens up to a tranquil reflecting pool. At the center of the pool stands a giant cross, symbolizing the sacred union of faith and nature.
The church is open for free visits during the day, while nighttime guided tours are organized by the resort. The meeting point for these tours is outside the Buffet Dining Hal restaurant. However, the nighttime tours can sometimes attract a large number of visitors, and the occasional chatter of tourists may clash with the solemn ambiance of the church. Visiting in the early morning, when the area is deserted, offers a particularly peaceful and serene experience.
The interior of the church reflects Ando's signature exposed concrete architectural style. Its minimalist design draws attention to the natural surroundings and the symbols of faith outside, leaving a profound impression on visitors. However, during the summer, the lack of air conditioning can make the interior quite warm during the day. Visitors are advised to wear light clothing and stay hydrated.
Additionally, the Church on the Water offers wedding and photography services, making it a dream venue for many couples seeking a sacred and romantic setting for their special day. Even if you’re not attending a ceremony, you can still feel the emotions and spatial tension conveyed by this architectural masterpiece. It’s highly recommended to set aside time to personally experience this tranquil moment of dialogue with nature.
