Located in Shingu City, Wakayama Prefecture, Kumano Hayatama Taisha is one of the Kumano Sanzan (Three Grand Shrines of Kumano) and a sacred shrine known as the gateway to Kumano faith. The Kumano pilgrimage, which continues to Nachi and Hongu, begins here.
The main deities enshrined are Hayatama-no-Okami and Fusumi-no-Okami. These two deities are responsible for the creation of the Kumano deities, symbolizing the rebirth and new beginnings of all things. The grounds, lined with vermilion-lacquered shrine buildings, have a bright atmosphere that evokes the breath of life. Compared to other Kumano shrines nestled in the deep forest, this one has a more open and cheerful feel.
The grounds also contain the entrance to Mount Kamikura, where Kamikura Shrine's sacred object, Gotobiki Rock, is enshrined. This is an important site considered the origin of ancient Kumano faith. A steep stone staircase leads to the rock throne where the Kumano deities are said to have first descended. This is a place where you can truly experience the "original Kumano."
