Shiogama Shrine, Ichinomiya, Mutsu Province

#Roadtrip
Shiogama Shrine in Shiogama City is one of the most historic and traditional shrines not only in Miyagi but also in the Tohoku region.
In the Middle Ages, the Oshu Fujiwara clan and the Date clan of the Sendai domain were deeply religious at the shrine.
The main deity enshrined is Shiotsuchioji-no-kami. He is the god who taught people how to make salt, and in mythology, he played the role of a "signpost" for the characters.

The Shiogama Minato Festival, one of Japan's three major boat festivals, is held every July and starts at Shiogama Shrine. A portable shrine is carried down the stone steps of the main approach to the shrine, through the city, and then tours Matsushima Bay accompanied by about 100 boats.
