🕊️ An Important Base of Kumano Faith
Kumano Sansho Taisha Shrine is one of the important pilgrimage sites for pilgrims walking the Nakahechi Route. Located on the way to Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine, it is named after the deities enshrined there—the three Kumano shrines (Hongu, Shingu, and Nachi). It was once an important place of worship on the Kumano pilgrimage route, and it's said that many people would join hands here to pray.
🌳 Quiet Grounds
The grounds are surrounded by cedar and cypress trees, creating a tranquil space where sunlight filters through the trees as you walk. Passing through the large torii gate, the worship hall is at the end of a flight of stone steps, exuding a simple yet solemn atmosphere. While not flashy, it's a place where you can experience the unique Kumano scenery of "nature and faith united."
🚶 A Place of Rest Along the Nakahechi Route
Kumano Sansho Taisha Shrine is also a place to rest and take a break along the Nakahechi route. Visiting here during your long journey will reset your mind and give you the strength to continue on to Kumano Hongu. It's a peaceful shrine, and you'll understand why people have stopped here since ancient times.
📌 Location: Nakahechi-cho, Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture
Kumano Sansho Taisha Shrine is a small, ancient shrine that evokes the history of Nakahechi and the Kumano faith. Stopping here as a place of rest and prayer along the way will make your Kumano pilgrimage even more meaningful.
