Located in Siem Reap, Cambodia, Angkor Thom is the largest of the Angkor ruins and a symbol of the glory of the Khmer Empire. It was built at the end of the 12th century and renovated by the then emperor Jayavarman VII. This huge temple city is an important heritage site alongside Angkor Wat, and is overwhelmed by its grandeur and mysterious atmosphere. The iconic entrance to Angkor Thom is the Great South Gate. Here, visitors are greeted by a row of giant statues of gods and demons. Once you pass through the Great Gate, Bayon Temple awaits. The temple is famous for its Khmer architecture and intricate carvings, and is particularly distinctive for the 44 mysterious faces carved on top of the tower. Each one has a divine expression, and it gives the illusion that the face changes depending on the angle from which you look at it. In addition, the sculptures depicting war battle scenes and daily life painted in the corridors of the Bayon Temple are valuable evidence of the prosperity of the Khmer Kingdom at that time 🎨🖌️
Angkor Thom is not just a temple ruin, but also the remains of a magnificent city, with the former royal palace and square still retaining their appearance 🌍🕊️ Ta Prohm and the Lion Gate are also scattered within the site, and you can experience their historical value while walking slowly 🚶♂️💭
Angkor Thom occupies an important position among the Angkor ruins in terms of its large scale and historical background, and by visiting you can feel the glory of the Khmer Empire 💙
