Minzhu Road Cultural Street, formerly known as "Xinpu Street", is the birthplace of the former Xinpu District of Lianyungang City, Jiangsu Province. It is one of the four old streets in the historical development of Lianyungang City (Haizhou Ancient City, Minzhu Road Cultural Street, Lianyungang Old Street, and Nancheng Six Dynasties Street).
In the 1920s and 1930s, Minzhu Road was a bustling commercial hub, brimming with traffic and earning it the nickname "Little Shanghai" of northern Jiangsu. A smaller street market also developed not far to the north. Because it lay north of the main street, it was often called "Back Street" (today's Jianguo Road). South of it, before liberation, a road stretched as wide as several older streets, making it Xinpu's largest. It was often called "South Road" or "Big Road" (today's section of Jiefang Middle Road, from Nanji Road to Longwei River).
In April 2013, the Lianyungang Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government proposed upgrading and renovating Minzhu Road, Xinpu District's most historic and culturally significant street, and developing the Yanhe Lane Historical and Cultural District to further enhance the city's cultural heritage. Under the theme of "Impression of Xinpu," this historic street has been revitalized. In January 2015, the Minzhu Road Cultural Tourism Zone was officially designated a National 3A Tourist Attraction.
