During my downtown Singapore citywalk, I ventured to Level 2 of The Arts House, formerly the Old Parliament House, and uncovered a trove of national history. The Blue Room, once a lounge for Members of Parliament, was where Singapore’s first Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew, convened with his cabinet. Its Corinthian columns and Palladian windows exude timeless elegance.
Adjacent lies the Council Room, which served as the Prime Minister’s office from 1959 to 1999, used by both Lee Kuan Yew and Goh Chok Tong. The centerpiece is the Chamber, the former parliamentary debate hall, retaining its original 1954 furnishings and a castle motif from Singapore’s colonial coat of arms. Today, these spaces host arts events, offering visitors a unique blend of political heritage and cultural vibrancy. A must-visit for history enthusiasts and culture seekers alike.
