If you're traveling to Kaohsiung and can only choose one place to watch the sunset, I would unhesitatingly recommend Xiziwan.
Unlike Kenting's vibrant passion or Cijin's bustling beach vibes, Xiziwan carries a unique "gentle charm of an urban harbor." Here, gazing at the sea feels effortless, daydreaming is encouraged, and the sunset is worth patiently waiting for.
🌇 One of Taiwan's most iconic sunsets, hidden by Kaohsiung Harbor
The most famous feature of Xiziwan is its breathtaking sunset sinking into the horizon. When the afternoon sunlight hits the sea, it sparkles like diamonds; as the sun gradually sets, the entire bay is painted in gradients of golden orange, rose red, and deep purple, resembling a silent fireworks display across the sky.
At the moment the sun dips low, the crowd often falls silent, quietly watching the sun disappear behind Kaohsiung Harbor's horizon. It's a kind of awe and romance that can only be understood by witnessing it firsthand.
🏞️ A blend of mountain, sea, and city—scenery with stories and layers
Beyond the sea view, Xiziwan offers a unique intersection of mountain and city.
You can choose to stroll along the seaside trail or climb the small hill at the "Former British Consulate at Takao Cultural Park" to overlook the entire Xiziwan bay. This red-brick colonial building was once the British consulate office in Taiwan during the 19th century and is now one of Kaohsiung's most historically rich viewpoints.
Standing on the balcony, you can gaze at the sea while feeling the echoes of history on one side and watching modern cargo ships slowly navigate on the other. This juxtaposition of eras leaves a lasting impression.
🚴♀️ A local's everyday stroll and a backdrop of youthful memories
For Kaohsiung locals, Xiziwan is not just a tourist spot but a part of their daily scenery.
In the evening, couples ride bicycles, students gather in groups, and solitary individuals sit quietly by the shore. Everyone moves at their own pace, yet all are embraced by the sea. This place is also a cherished backdrop for many students from National Sun Yat-sen University. From the campus to the seaside, it takes only a few minutes—a single turn reveals a horizon where the sea meets the sky.

💬 "The sunset at Xiziwan is not an everyday view; it's a twilight worth waiting for."
Whether you're with friends, a lover, or enjoying solitude, Xiziwan is a place that invites you to slow down.
Wait for a sunset, take a seaside stroll, or simply daydream for a while. These are the most healing moments of travel.
