Boyana Church

If you're in Sofia, escape the hustle and bustle of the city and visit the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Boyana Church! 🇧🇬 This hidden gem nestled in the foothills of Vitosha Mountain is a masterpiece of Bulgarian medieval art.

While the church itself isn't large, it houses one of the world's best-preserved medieval frescoes. These frescoes, created in the 13th century, are renowned for their vibrant colors, realistic depictions of figures, and unique artistic style, making them a precursor to Renaissance art, even predating the Italian Renaissance! 😱 Stepping inside the church feels like stepping back in time, with each wall whispering stories and the power of faith.

To preserve the frescoes, access to the church's interior is limited. Only a limited number of visitors are allowed at a time, and viewing times are limited, but seeing these priceless works of art in person is a truly rewarding experience.

Boyana Church is located on the outskirts of Sofia, a 20-30-minute taxi or bus ride away. Admission is approximately 10-15 leva (BGN), with discounts for students and children. Please note that photography is not permitted inside. Come and experience this moving piece of history and art!
