A Small Joy Blooming on the Waves – A Sokcho Flounder Fishing Experience

In the early morning, as the cold air brushed against my cheeks, I arrived at Sokcho Harbor to find the sea already prepared to start its day. The moment I stepped onto the boat, the salty scent of the ocean filled my nose, and the dawn breaking beyond the distant horizon warmed my heart. It was a thrill I could never feel in the city.

When I cast my fishing line for the first time, I wondered if I would catch anything at all. But soon, a heavy vibration traveled up the line, and my heart reacted before my mind could. The unique, steady tug of the flounder sent a thrilling sensation all the way to my fingertips, a feeling that words can hardly capture. As I reeled it in, carefully maintaining tension to avoid losing the catch, the shimmering scales of the flounder breaking the surface brought an instinctive smile to my face.

One fish, then another... As the catch piled up, I found myself forgetting the cold. A slice of freshly prepared sashimi on the boat was colder than the wind but warmer than the sunlight. It was amazing how flavorful it was, even without a pinch of salt.

Flounder fishing in Sokcho may not be a flashy activity, but it offers the joy of life transmitted through your fingertips during moments of patient waiting. It felt as though the waves carried away the weariness of city life. Next time, I’d love to bring my family or friends to share this experience. The East Sea in winter is far more generous and warm than I had imagined.
