Introducing Anfengtang

Anfengtang Reservoir is located 60 li south of Shou County, Huainan City, Anhui Province. Its ancient name was Shaobi (pronounced quèbēi). It was first built during the Spring and Autumn Period during the reign of King Zhuang of Chu (613 BC-591 BC) and was built by Sun Shuao, the prime minister of Chu. It is a famous large-scale irrigation project in Chinese history and still plays a significant role in irrigation.

Anfengtang, along with the later Dujiangyan Irrigation System, the Zhanghe Canal, and the Zhengguo Canal, is considered one of the four great water conservancy projects of ancient China. In ancient times, it was hailed as "the greatest pond in the world." Anfengtang boasts a profound historical and cultural heritage and a rich regional cultural atmosphere. Its people, rich in artistic wisdom, have created a diverse array of folk literature and art. The legend of Anfengtang, among other things, has been inscribed on the Anhui Province Intangible Cultural Heritage List.

In 1988, Anfengtang was listed as the third batch of national key cultural relics protection units by the State Council.

Anfengtang receives approximately 390 square kilometers of water from the Huashui River west of Longxue Mountain and east of Xiaohua Mountain in Lu'an County. Water from the Pi River is diverted south of Zhongxingji on the Piyuan River through the Ziwu Canal (Piyuan Canal) to Gezui, where it flows into the Tang River. The reservoir cleverly utilizes the local terrain, which is higher on the east, south, and west sides and lower on the north. The reservoir utilizes the natural lake and is surrounded by embankments constructed using local soil, sand, gravel, pebbles, ballast, and stone. This water conservancy project primarily serves flood control, water storage, and irrigation purposes. The Anfengtang embankment has a circumference of approximately 25 kilometers, covers an area of approximately 34 square kilometers, and holds nearly 100 million cubic meters of water. It also features 19 culverts and sluice gates, irrigating 70,000 hectares of land.
