As part of my spring itinerary in Penang, I made a peaceful visit to Kampung Terang, located in Balik Pulau — one of Penang’s quieter, more scenic regions. I arrived in the evening, just in time to catch the golden hour stretching across the paddy fields and village lanes as thought. Unfortunately, the sky turned dark just as we arrived, casting a moody atmosphere over the landscape.
The area offers a picture-perfect slice of rural life, with traditional wooden houses, grazing cows, and narrow roads flanked by palm trees and rice fields. The calm, flat terrain made it perfect for walking or cycling, with birds chirping and locals waving as I passed by.
The highlight was standing by the paddy field, watching the sunset paint the sky in soft orange and pink tones — truly a moment of stillness away from the bustle of George Town.
Travel Tips:
• Best time to visit: Evening (5pm–6:30pm) for soft light and countryside breeze.
• Great for: Photography, village walks, and quiet reflection.
• Bring water and light snacks: No shops nearby unless you detour to town.
• Dress light: It’s usually warm, and there’s little shade.
• Respect the locals: It’s a lived-in village — keep noise low and smile often.
• Watch your step: Some paths may be muddy if it’s rained.
How to Get There:
• By car or motorbike: Around 45 minutes from George Town via Balik Pulau road.
• Use Google Maps: Search “Kampung Terang, Balik Pulau.”
• By Grab: Possible, but rides back may be limited — plan ahead.
• Combine with: A stop at Balik Pulau market, or visit nearby durian farms or fishing villages.
