The century-old cedars lining the approach to Anhu Hachiman Shrine filter the sunlight into a pale golden hue. Suddenly, as I turn past the final torii gate, the golden-lacquered, kabuki-style eaves of the main hall emerge from the mist. Intricately carved golden dragons gleam in the morning dew, seemingly poised to soar from the cypress beams.
Most striking are the vermilion lacquer railings of Kagura Hall—artisans inlaid phoenix feathers using the "Extreme Color" technique to create a gradated sheen. When the afternoon sun slants across the building, it casts a dazzling halo of light and shadow on the ground.
Tips:
Kimono rentals are available nearby, so wear one to visit the shrine.
