Mudu Ancient Town

Located in the WuZhong District of Suzhou City, Mudu Ancient Town is a charming Jiangnan water town with a history of over 2,500 years. It is known as the "Number One Town in WuZhong" and praised for its exquisite beauty, surpassing all others in the Jiangnan region.

The history of Mudu Ancient Town can be traced back to the Spring and Autumn Period. Its name originates from the story of King Fuchai of Wu, who, to please his concubine Xi Shi, ordered the construction of the Guanwa Palace. The vast amount of timber used for the project blocked the river, giving the town its name, "Mudu," meaning "blocked by wood." As old as Suzhou City itself, Mudu has witnessed the rise and fall of Wu culture.

Main Attractions:

Yan Family Garden: Originally named "Xian Yuan" (Garden of Admiration), it was the residence of Yan Guoxin, the richest man in Mudu during the Qing Dynasty. The garden boasts exquisite layout and varied scenery throughout the four seasons. The Nanmu Hall, also known as Shangxian Hall, is a Ming Dynasty structure of extraordinary grandeur.

Hongyin Shanfang: A must-visit destination for Emperor Qianlong during his six trips to Southern China. The garden features a large opera stage where the emperor enjoyed performances. Twenty imperial edicts are also on display.

Ancient Pine Garden: Home to a 500-year-old Podocarpus macrophyllus (Luo Han Song), the garden's exquisite carvings and the Yao Jianping Embroidery Art Museum on the west side of the back garden are also worth visiting.

Bangyan Mansion: The former residence of Feng Guifen, a Qing Dynasty thinker, renowned for its intricate brick, wood, and stone carvings.

Shantang Street: The main street of the ancient town, it stretches from Lingyan Mountain in the north to the town center in the south. Numerous private gardens and ancient buildings line the street.

Ticket Prices: Entry to the ancient town is free, but some attractions require separate tickets. A combined ticket for Yan Family Garden, Hongyin Shanfang, Ancient Pine Garden, and Bangyan Mansion costs 78 yuan.

Opening Hours: 8:30 am to 5:00 pm from April to October, and 8:30 am to 4:30 pm from November to March.
