Must-Visit Crayfish Restaurant in Suzhou, China

In China, you can enjoy crayfish dishes all year round. However, May and June are the peak season for crayfish, so if you're traveling to China during this time, I highly recommend trying crayfish made with fresh seasonal ingredients. This is when crayfish tastes the best! At the end of May, I visited Suzhou in Jiangsu Province to meet a Chinese friend living there. My friend took me to Matouxiang 马头香, which is known as a top spot for crayfish in Suzhou.

Koreans are familiar with spicy mala crayfish 麻辣龙虾, but in Suzhou, you must try the sweet and savory soy sauce-based Jiangyou crayfish 酱油龙虾. The seasoning is mild, and the texture of the seasonal crayfish was outstanding, making it an incredibly delicious experience. Although peeling crayfish can be a bit of a hassle, the taste is absolutely worth it.

We also ordered dishes like spicy Mao Xue Wang (毛血旺), stir-fried baby bok choy, tomato lime pickles, and Suzhou's traditional bread, which tastes similar to Korean steamed bread. I especially loved the Suzhou bread and kept dipping it into the crayfish sauce. Its fluffy yet chewy texture was completely to my liking.

Matouxiang 马头香 is such a famous restaurant in Suzhou that even at night, it was bustling with customers. The entire street was filled with Matouxiang buildings, which was quite fascinating. Truly, the scale of China is impressive.

If you're traveling to Suzhou during the crayfish season in May and June, I highly recommend visiting Matouxiang 马头香 🇨🇳♥️
