China/Suzhou - People waiting in line for plum cake snacks on Pingjiang Road

Meihua gao (plum cake) is a popular snack in Suzhou that has been around for a long time. It is characterized by its unusual shape, which is long downwards, and its name is said to come from its resemblance to a plum blossom.

The taste is just like a Japanese kaitenyaki (obanyaki)! The outside is made of wheat flour and baked until crispy and chewy, and the inside is filled with sweet red bean paste. It's a taste that is very familiar to Japanese people! The shiratama dumplings and dried jujube on top also add texture and flavor, making it delicious 😋👍

In addition to the traditional red bean paste, this shop also has chestnut paste, sweet and salty pork paste, crab paste, and more. You can eat it in an endless loop, alternating between sweet and salty.

The red bean paste is reasonably priced at 8 yuan (about 160 yen) each. Recommended for eating on the go!

It tastes best when it's hot and fresh, but it takes about 30 minutes to bake it from scratch, so there seems to be a line on weekends. Make sure you have plenty of time to get there~❤️
