The Taipei National Palace Museum holds countless treasures, but one of the most unforgettable pieces is the Qing Dynasty Carved Ivory Puzzle Ball (1850–1900).

This artwork stands 54.8 cm tall with a central sphere of 11.7 cm, and it’s nothing short of astonishing. At first glance, it looks like a beautifully carved ivory ball — but look closer, and you’ll see that it actually contains 18 concentric layers, all carved from a single piece of ivory. Each layer is hollowed, decorated with patterns, and able to move freely inside the others, creating a mesmerizing effect.

The outermost layer shows detailed carvings of mountains, pavilions, and people, while the inner layers display delicate openwork patterns. It is linked together with tiny chains and screws, proving not just artistic talent but also incredible engineering skill.

This masterpiece is believed to have been created by Cantonese ivory carvers during the late Qing dynasty. The craftsmanship was so extraordinary that in the imperial court, such works were nicknamed “Immortal’s Work”, as if no ordinary hands could have made them.
