Takachiho Gorge: Magnificent Views and Power Spots

Takachiho Gorge is a canyon located in Takachiho Town, Nishiusuki District, Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan, also known as Gokase River Gorge. This canyon was formed by the volcanic activity of Mount Aso. The pyroclastic flow produced by the volcanic eruption about 100,000 years ago flowed down the Gokase River and cooled to form igneous rocks with columnar joints. As the Gokase River eroded, cliffs 80 to 100 meters high and 7 kilometers long gradually formed.

Takachiho Gorge is listed as a scenic spot and natural monument in Japan and is a popular tourist attraction. Visitors can rent sightseeing boats and row in the canyon to enjoy the magnificent scenery. One of the most famous landscapes is Manai Falls, which is 17 meters high and is listed as one of the 100 waterfalls in Japan.

Takachiho Gorge is lined with andesite cliffs on both sides of the gorge. From spring to early summer, mountain cherry blossoms and azaleas are in full bloom, and in autumn, red maples are dyed, allowing visitors to enjoy different scenery in different seasons.
