Kamishikimi Kumanoza Shrine, located in Aso, Kumamoto Prefecture, Kyushu, is famous for its fantastical setting, featured in the popular anime "Fireflies in the Forest of Hotaru."

The moss-covered torii gates and stone lanterns, along with the large wind holes carved into the rock face, are dedicated to the mythological gods Izanagi and Izanami, the creators of the world, and Ishikun Daishogun, the spirit of Aso Daimyojin (Tatsumi Kenwa).

Kamishikimi Kumanoza Shrine is also known for its many legends. Tall cedar trees stretch to the horizon within the shrine grounds, creating a mystical, lush landscape.

Driving by car was a more convenient option this time.
The round-trip walk from the parking lot to the shrine approach takes about 30 minutes. If you continue further inside to Kuroto Rock, the round-trip walk takes about 50 minutes. Starting from the parking lot, you'll encounter a steep incline and approximately 400 meters of stairs. For those with less stamina or in bad weather, reaching the summit may take longer. It all depends on your stamina!

Access: Approximately a 10-minute drive from Takamori Station on the Minami Aso Railway.
