Recommended off-the-beaten-path leisure spots in Japan. They're free of tourist crowds and perfect for a relaxing break!

Takaoka Castle Park is located in Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture, within walking distance of Takaoka Station. From Toyama Station, it's just one Shinkansen stop to Shin-Takaoka (about 10 minutes), and then one stop to Takaoka Station on the conventional line, a 10-minute walk away!

While Takaoka Castle is no longer visible in this park, the park provides a QR code that you can scan with your phone to see the castle's former glory!

Another top recommendation is to visit the zoo within the park—it's surprisingly free! There are a variety of animals to see, including a taxidermy area. What surprised me most was the penguins and owls. The park itself is small, so exploring it all takes about 2-3 hours!
There's also a Shimizu Shrine within the park, which I highly recommend visiting.
