📍Old Streets of Takayama City

The three streets of Kamimachi and Shimomachi, which developed as the center of the castle town and a merchant town, are called the old townscape.

An irrigation canal flows under the eaves of a row of latticed windows, sake breweries have "sakebayashi" balls made of cedar leaves hanging from them,
and the large doors of townhouses and noren curtains of long-established stores line the eaves.

Kamimachi is lined with candy stores, traditional craft stores,
and stores selling the famous "mitarashi dango,"
and is bustling with tourists.

Shimomachi is a precious streetscape where stores related to civic life remain.
It is a tourist spot for Takayama connoisseurs, with old-fashioned streets such as confectionery, rice cake stores, antique stores, agricultural equipment, tatami mats, stationery, post offices, and restaurants.
