Open-Air Museum in Takayama: A Journey into the Hida Region’s Past

Just outside the center of Takayama lies a hidden treasure — the Hida Folk Village, an open-air museum that transports you to rural Japan from centuries ago. Surrounded by forested hills and a peaceful pond, this village features over 30 traditional houses relocated from across the Hida region, including thatched-roof gassho-zukuri homes built without nails.

You can step inside these houses to discover how locals lived through harsh winters, with irori hearths, tools, and crafts on display. Some homes offer hands-on workshops in wood carving, weaving, or making washi paper. The walking paths wind through maple trees, creating a serene atmosphere especially in autumn or snow season.

Visiting Hida no Sato is like flipping through the pages of a living history book, surrounded by nature and tradition.

Tips:
• Open year-round — go in the morning for quiet walks
• Wear comfy shoes, there’s a small uphill path
• Bring coins for local craft workshops or vending machines with regional drinks
