Kurobe Dam, located at the border of Nagano Prefecture and Toyama Prefecture in the mountainous region of the Tateyama Mountain Range, is a magnificent artificial dam and Japan's tallest arch concrete dam, standing at an impressive height of 186 meters. Known as the "Engineering Marvel of the Century," it serves as a vital base for hydroelectric power generation and has become a highly popular tourist destination in the Northern Alps region due to its breathtaking natural surroundings.
From mid-June to mid-October each year, the "Tourist Water Discharge" event takes place, where massive amounts of water cascade down both sides of the dam, creating a spectacular and iconic sight. Whether it's the lush greenery of summer or the vibrant autumn foliage, the scenery is stunning year-round, making it a paradise for hikers, photographers, and nature enthusiasts.
Visiting Kurobe Dam is one of the highlights of the "Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route," a journey that typically involves taking cable cars, trolley buses, and mountain buses, offering an adventurous experience.
