Hiking the Besseggen

One of Norway’s most iconic hikes, Besseggen Ridge in Jotunheimen National Park offers breathtaking views of turquoise Gjende Lake and deep-blue Bessvatnet Lake — separated by a narrow mountain ridge. I plan to visit all the iconic hikes in Norway, and this hike is high on my list.
🚗 How to Get There from Oslo
By car: The drive from Oslo to Gjendesheim takes about 4–5 hours (around 360 km). Take the E6 north toward Lillehammer, then follow signs to Otta → Vågå → Gjendesheim. Roads are well maintained, but check conditions if traveling early or late in the hiking season. I left around 6 p.m. on Friday, and there was a bit of traffic jam leaving the city.
By bus: In summer, Nor-Way Bussekspress and Vy Express offer seasonal routes from Oslo to Gjendesheim.
🏡 Where to Stay
The most convenient base is DNT Cabin, located right by the starting point. The lodge provides free parking for guests and includes all meals, but it’s a bit pricey.
For a quieter experience, you can also stay in nearby Beitostølen town, about 30- 45 minutes away by car. The town is small but has a few restaurants and supermarkets open on Sunday. We stayed there — it was affordable for a group, and we could cook our own meals. We made Norwegian waffles and it was really nice.
⛴️ How to Start the Hike
The classic Besseggen route starts from Memurubu and ends at Gjendesheim. Most hikers:
1. Take the Gjende ferry from Gjendesheim to Memurubu (about 20 minutes).
2. Hike back over Besseggen Ridge to Gjendesheim.
Ferry tickets should be booked in advance at **gjende.no**, especially on weekends or in peak summer. We booked the day before, and two out of three time slots were already sold out. There’s also a café and free toilets next to the ferry area.
If you drive, make sure to arrive 30 minutes early for parking and boarding. Parking near Gjendesheim DNT Cabin is expensive and limited, so I recommend **Parking for Gjende Ferry** (Fv51 1694, 2683 Tessanden). Remember to buy a parking ticket (140 NOK/day) online at Visit Gjende before your hike. The package for four people and one car is 299 NOK, including a return shuttle bus to the Gjendesheim starting point.
🥾 The Hike
Distance: ~13 km
Elevation gain: ~1,200 m
Duration: 6–8 hours
The hike starts with a gradual ascent, then a steep scramble up the ridge with stunning views of the contrasting lakes below. At the summit, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of Jotunheimen’s jagged peaks before descending back to Gjendesheim.
💡 Travel Tips
Start early (around 7–8 a.m.) to avoid crowds and catch the first ferry.
Bring layered clothing — mountain weather changes fast.
Wear sturdy hiking boots with good grip.
Pack water, snacks, and sunscreen. Lots of food!!!
The hike is challenging; allow plenty of time and pace yourself.
Follow red mark and you are safe!
PS: Check out Valdres Folkemuseum (really cool) or Fagernes bybadstue (to enjoy sauna).
