Kiyotsu Gorge offers a serene and refreshing atmosphere, whether during the vibrant autumn foliage season or the lush greenery of early autumn. The sound of the natural river is incredibly soothing, and the air is crisp and clean. Along the way, there are plenty of rest areas and viewing spots where visitors can take their time to enjoy the scenery and snap photos. Conveniently located not far from the city center, it is a must-visit natural attraction in Tokamachi City!
Suggested Itinerary and Must-Do Experiences:
Start at the base entrance (Address: Tokamachi City, Niigata Prefecture 949-8433). After purchasing your ticket, follow the signs to walk through the gorge tunnel, which is approximately 750 meters long. The tunnel features several photo-worthy and scenic platforms. The temperature inside the tunnel is comfortable, with high humidity but good ventilation, making it suitable for families or groups of friends to explore together. Along the way, there are numerous photo spots, with the "Water Mirror Viewing Platform" being the most popular, reflecting the gorge's stunning scenery. In autumn, the backdrop transforms into a sea of deep red foliage.
Recommended Photo Spots:
1. Water Mirror Viewing Platform – A mirrored water pool deep within the tunnel, a highly recommended spot for stunning photos.
2. Lovers' Chair – Perfect for couples or friends to sit and take pictures with the magnificent gorge as the backdrop.
3. Multiple Glass Window Viewing Points – Each offers a panoramic view of the autumn leaves and river.
Tips for Visiting:
1. Autumn tends to attract more visitors, so it's best to avoid weekends and holidays. Arriving before 10 AM on weekdays allows for easier photo opportunities.
2. The tunnel floor can be slippery, so wear non-slip athletic shoes to avoid accidents.
3. Bring some snacks or water, as there are limited shop options near the gorge.
4. The walk through the gorge takes about 1-1.5 hours. It's not too strenuous, but if it rains, remember to bring an umbrella or waterproof jacket.
5. Tickets can be purchased on-site (Cost: JPY 580). Operating hours are from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Allocate enough time to fully enjoy the experience.
Important Notes:
The tunnel is well-lit, but some areas may be dim. Bringing a small flashlight or using your phone's light is recommended for safety. Certain parts of the gorge can be windy, and the temperature in early autumn can fluctuate, so wearing an extra layer is advisable.
