The Sumida Aquarium is a must stop if you are visiting Tokyo with small children, it’s an amazing family friendly experiences that gives you a glimpse of the wonders in the deep blue sea. It is located in the base of the Tokyo Skytree and you can access it from the giant mall that anchors them both, the two nearest metro stations both have signage for the aquarium and the sky tree.
I bought my ticket as a combo with the skytree and given it’s urban location I went in with pretty low expectations, safe to say I was blown away! It was amazing, a well thought-out aquarium both visually and educationally. It has a wide range of underwater creates and enough information to help you fully understand their habitat, food chain and history.
It’s also an incredible place to visit if you have children that are very driven by sensory stimulation, the use of lights in particular I found very calming but engaging. The aquarium follows a walk through layout and you meander through the smaller exhibits between the larger tanks, the main ones being the tank with the shark and the penguin experience. MY favourite area by far was the jellyfish corridor, hundreds of stunning jellyfish of all different shapes, sizes and colours moving in a huge swarm.
I was really impressed overall and found it a really educational and enlightening experience, it also has a a great gift shop with lots of things centered on the penguin branding of the aquarium.
