I've always wanted to visit the Haruki Murakami Library (officially called the "Waseda University International Literature Museum"), not only because I love his novels but also because I want to personally experience the world behind the words. This time, my schedule finally allowed it, so I specially arranged an afternoon pilgrimage.
The library is located inside the Waseda University campus, in a quiet environment full of academic atmosphere. As soon as you enter, you see the wooden architecture designed by Japan's master architect Kengo Kuma—simple yet warm. The whole space is filled with natural light, very comfortable. There is also a rotating bookshelf at the entrance, packed with Murakami’s works and translations, and the scent of books is really strong.
I sat down in the reading area on the second floor, looking out at the green plants on campus, quietly opening a collection of Murakami’s essays. At that moment, it felt like time stopped. They also play the jazz music he likes, making the whole experience very relaxing, as if you truly stepped into the world of his novels.
There is no admission fee, but remember to book online in advance (it’s not open every day), and drinks are not allowed inside. The interior space isn’t very large, but every corner is designed with great detail, perfect for strolling slowly and soaking it all in.
My favorite part is the small exhibition area in the basement about Murakami’s creative process. You can see his manuscripts, old computer, writing tools, and even sketches he drew while translating Carver’s novels. It feels like you’re sneaking a peek at his desk while he’s writing.
Before leaving, I bought an iced latte at a nearby café and sat on a bench on campus, continuing to read. The breeze blew gently, and my heart felt calm and fulfilled. If you’re a Murakami fan, it’s really worth coming here once. Don’t rush, walk quietly, and you’ll find many unexpected little touches that move you.
