The ultimate value-for-money hotel|InterContinental Skyline!! ANA InterContinental Tokyo

During a long slump, only by refining oneself can one wait for the tide to rise again.

When I stayed at the ANA InterContinental Tokyo, the weather finally cleared up. This high-rise building, constructed at the end of the Showa era, is like a giant time capsule witnessing the era of economic bubble peak revelry. This 37-story triangular prism building has sharp and orderly lines, neither too provocative nor too surprising, responding to the arrogance of economic takeoff with an almost bureaucratic precision: higher, more complex, and indisputable.

This time, I used a suite voucher to upgrade to the Tsuki Suite and stayed for four nights. The executive-level rooms have all been renovated, with very new hard furnishings and a very comfortable color tone. Breakfast at the second-floor restaurant and the 35th-36th floor lounge was excellent; the second floor offered a richer variety, while the lounge allowed ordering a Japanese breakfast set. Dinner was mostly enjoyed during happy hour at the lounge, with a cold buffet and a hot three-item tapas set per person, usually one seafood, one beef/pork, and one chicken dish, with the hot menu changing daily throughout the week. As for drinks, besides the steady daily one or two glasses of Moet & Chandon champagne, I also liked their cocktail called Tokyo Spritz, which is probably made with champagne and plum wine—very delicious.

What impressed me even more was that, as it was early April during cherry blossom season, the hotel showed no signs of struggling or being overwhelmed in management and service. Whether in the lounge or the second-floor restaurant, the hotel staff handled everything with ease and great professionalism.

This inevitably made me admire the Japanese style of resilience. After the bubble burst in the 1990s, this hotel perhaps barely maintained its dignity during the bleak Heisei years. Now, as tourists from around the world flock back to Tokyo and capital begins to revalue the land and assets here, this long-established hotel has sensed the breath of revival. Its service has never slackened, even becoming more meticulous than before. Every detail in the rooms, every subtle anticipation by the concierge, reveals a stubborn pride: they refuse to be abandoned by the times. During the long downturn, they silently refined themselves, waiting for the tide to rise again.
