History of Keio Nakadori Shopping Street
Keio Nakadori is a dining street located in Shiba 5-chome, Minato Ward, Tokyo. Various shops line a narrow alley about 3 meters wide connecting JR Tamachi Station and Mita Street. Geographically, the road runs east-west from Mita 2-chome to Shiba 5-chome, then bends southeast at the point leading to Tamachi. At the crossroads just inside from Mita Street stands the "Chanoki Inari" shrine, and near the Tamachi side is the historic site of the Mizuno Kanmotsu residence, where the Akō rōnin committed seppuku.
Chanoki Inari is a small Inari shrine beside Keio Nakadori. The enshrined deity is Inari Okami, who governs food and clothing, and is believed to bring blessings for family safety, agriculture, industry, commercial prosperity, skill improvement, and safe travel.
The Mizuno Kanmotsu residence site was the secondary residence of the Mizuno family, lords of the Okazaki domain in Mikawa Province. Only a stone lantern remains today. When Mizuno Tadayuki was lord, nine Akō rōnin who attacked Kira Yoshinaka’s residence during the Genroku Akō incident were held here awaiting the shogunate’s judgment and ultimately committed seppuku on February 4, 1703 (March 20, 1703) at this residence. The site is located in front of a clinic at the southeast bend at the end of the shopping street from Mita 2-chome toward Tamachi. The actual residence was about 50 meters north of this location.
