The Beauty of Ancient China Encountered at the Aizu Yaichi Memorial Museum — The World of Bronze Ware

🏛 Encounter the Beauty of Ancient China at the Aizu Yaichi Memorial Museum — The World of Bronze Ware

Located on the Waseda University campus, the Aizu Yaichi Memorial Museum is a hidden gem where you can explore Japanese culture from both literary and artistic perspectives.
The collection of ancient Chinese bronze ware displayed in a corner of the permanent exhibition room is a must-see for history enthusiasts.

Seeing the bronze ware up close reveals a weight and texture that photos and illustrations cannot convey.
Especially the ritual vessels from the Yin and Zhou periods, with their beautiful verdigris, bear surface patterns that symbolize ancient prayers and authority.
Depending on the lighting, the engraved lines stand out, allowing you to feel the craftsmanship and spirituality of people from over 3,000 years ago.

The exhibition room is quiet, providing a relaxing atmosphere to appreciate the works.
After viewing, you can explore other exhibition rooms featuring calligraphy and archaeological materials related to Aizu Yaichi, offering a fulfilling intellectual experience.

One of the three main pillars of the Aizu Yaichi Memorial Museum, the archaeology and ethnology section, is permanently exhibited in Room 125 on the 10th floor of the Okuma Memorial Tower (Building 26).

Waseda University has conducted excavation surveys of various historical sites worldwide, including Egypt, Central and South America, Southeast Asia, and domestically, Jomon period sites, ancient burial mounds, and temples. The materials discovered through these surveys are on display.

Additionally, ethnological materials from Africa and Oceania donated as part of the collection are also exhibited. Other valuable collections include the Anazawa Akimitsu Collection (bronze ware and bronze mirrors), the Tosabayashi Yoshio Collection (Ainu ethnological materials), and the Yamauchi Kiyoo Collection (pottery and stone tools).
