Nestled in the mountains of southern Jilin Province, Tonghua is a peaceful city full of natural beauty, rich history, and northeastern charm. Though not as well-known as big tourist cities, a day in Tonghua reveals a slower, more authentic side of China.
I began my day at Yuhuang Mountain Park, where winding paths lead through pine forests to a hilltop temple. The air was fresh and cool, and the view of the city below—surrounded by green hills—was breathtaking. Locals were out doing morning exercises, giving the place a peaceful, everyday energy.
Next, I visited the Tonghua Anti-Japanese War Memorial, a powerful site that honors the city’s role in history. The museum told stories of resistance and bravery, reminding me of the quiet strength of this land and its people.
For lunch, I enjoyed classic Dongbei flavors—braised pork, pickled vegetables, and a bowl of steaming noodles. Tonghua’s food is hearty and flavorful, perfect for the mountain climate.
In the afternoon, I took a walk along the Hun River, watching the sunlight dance on the water. Nearby, small markets sold fresh fruits, wild mushrooms, and local ginseng—one of Tonghua’s most famous products.
Tonghua may be a small mountain city, but it offers clean air, kind people, and a strong sense of place. It’s the kind of place where life moves quietly—but meaningfully. A hidden gem worth discovering.
