DAY 58:
Shodoshima has a warm climate all year round and is known as the "Mediterranean Sea of Japan". Olive groves, traditional soy sauce brewed in cypress barrels, and sun-dried noodles can be seen everywhere on the island. These traditional agricultural practices with a history of more than 400 years are still continuing today, and therefore the souvenirs on the island are products derived from these materials. Natural attractions include the "Angel Promenade" that appears at low tide, the legend that couples who hold hands and walk along the white sand path connecting four small islands will live a happy life, and the Toyon Strait, the narrowest strait certified by the Guinness World Records (the narrowest part is 9.93 meters). Shodoshima is also one of the venues for the Setouchi Triennale. Some of the works have become permanent installation art on the island, and some of them are hidden in inconspicuous places, so it takes some time to find them. In the past, many movies have been filmed on Shodoshima, the most famous of which is the movie "Twenty-Four Eyes" starring Hideko Takamine in the Showa era. The village and school built for the filming of the movie have been preserved to this day and have become a movie village. The only cinema in the village also screens the same classic work every day. In May this year (2024), the movie "Karakari Utsu no Takagi-san" (Teasing Master Takagi-san), starring Mei Nagano and Fumiya Takahashi, was also filmed in Shodoshima. It is a romantic love film spanning ten years. Although you haven't had the opportunity to visit Shodoshima yet, you can also experience this beautiful island known as the Japanese Mediterranean by watching the movie.
