It is said that it was built in 702, Echizen Province Ichinomiya, the general governor of Hokuriku Province. Tsunuga Shrine, a shrine in the precincts, is said to be the birthplace of the place name "Tsuruga", and is known locally as "Kei-san". In the precincts, there are four shrines, called the main hall, the East Hall, the Sosha Palace, the Heiden Palace, and the West Shrine, which are called the Four Shrines, and the Inner Hall and Outer Halls are connected from the main hall to the path. The vermilion-painted large torii towering on the path is one of the "three major torii" in Japan, along with the large torii of Kasuga Taisha Shrine in Nara and Itsukushima Shrine in Hiroshima. Although most of the shrines were rebuilt, the Otorii escaped air raids during World War II and is designated as an important cultural property of the country.
